Object Theater Masterclass with Xavier Bobés

  • Glickman Family Library, University of Southern Maine 314 Forest Avenue Portland, ME, 04103 United States (map)

Little by little, creating sentences of movement—choreography that is easily understandable—participants find their way to a story of the objects or the person who owned the objects or something fantasy-based. People work on their own, starting by explaining something around them and then working out from there: 1st person, 2nd person, 3rd person. Participants will work a lot in silence. They will be asked to bring objects the second day. During the workshop, they create short “sentences” and try to understand what universe is being revealed.

Xavi draws on works by writers who describe everyday life with a beautiful precision, good at describing how things matter in our everyday lives…even the banal things in our lives when repeated create the image of a person. Objects have the capacity to evoke decisions that happen when you are really yourself—working alone. You’re not pretending to be somebody like when you work in front of someone else.

Xavi draws from texts such as The Infra-Ordinary and Species of Spaces and Other Pieces by French novelist George Perec and The Thinking Hand, written by Finnish architect Juhani Pallasmaa. These works inform one on how to face the emptiness. How to start from the beginning.

At the end of the third day, participants will join residents at The Cedars who have studied object theater with Maskhunt Motions' Deborah Hunt to perform for each other and discuss their shared experiences.
