Approaching Puppetry through Materials with Night Shade

  • Maine College of Art & Design 522 Congress Street Portland, ME, 04101 United States (map)

Private Event

Sarah Frechette is a principal artist in Portland, Oregon-based Night Shade shadow puppetry ensemble and the director of the Vermont-based puppet troupe PuppetKabob. She's a graduate of UConn's puppet program, studied with master German puppeteer Albrecht Roser, and has taught at the O'Neill National Puppetry Conference.

Sarah will teach Maine College of Art & Design sculpture students a 3 hour workshop on approaching puppets through materials, exploring character through string-and-ball marionettes, scarves, and Roser-style cardboard sculptures the students create from flat patterns.

This unique workshop will provide a kinesthetic approach to bridging sculpture and performance from an art student's perspective. Mayo Street Arts' semi-annual puppet slam in November offers students who wish to keep exploring a great opportunity to share their work with a live audience.
